On Wednesday, Wisconsin Democratic Governor Tony Evers vetoed a bill designed to shield children from irreversible transgender surgeries and hormone treatments.

The vetoed legislation, endorsed by the Republican-majority state legislature, sought to prohibit procedures such as double mastectomies for girls who identify as boys and administering puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to children. It is essential to note that cross-sex hormones can negatively affect bone growth, fertility, and cardiac health.

Republican State Senator Duey Stroebel expressed his disappointment in the governor’s decision, stating that Evers’ veto further emphasizes his disconnect from reality. According to Stroebel, safeguarding children from irreversible medical procedures aligns with scientific findings and cultural ethical standards.

Although Republicans dominate the Senate with a potential override of the governor’s veto, they fall two seats short in the State Assembly. A similar situation occurred in Kentucky, where despite the incumbent Democratic Governor Andy Beshear’s opposition, Republicans succeeded in banning child transgender operations.

Evers’ decision did not resonate well with Assembly Speaker Robin Vos either. Vos criticizes Evers’ move as misguided and detrimental. He firmly advocates that life-altering decisions like gender change should be made as an adult rather than a child. He pointed out that several countries—including Norway, Sweden, Finland, the United Kingdom, and The Netherlands—prohibit gender transitioning operations before turning 18.

Contrary to these opinions, former school official Evers argued that the proposed law would have made Wisconsin less safe for its residents. He asserted that this legislation could inflict emotional harm on LGBTQ+ individuals and incite anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments encouraging violence against this group. In his veto message Evers stated he would turn down any proposal that threatens Wisconsin’s status as an inclusive haven for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Interestingly more than 20 states have enacted laws protecting minors from transgender procedures while liberal legal factions are challenging these laws with mixed results. One such case is the ACLU’s challenge to Tennessee’s law, an effort that was unsuccessful in the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Evers, who campaigned for re-election in 2022, has consistently rejected conservative-backed bills concerning voting rights, abortion legislations, and gun ownership regulations.
