In recent developments, The Vermont Community Fund has taken an innovative step towards education with the launch of drag queen story hours in rural Vermont. This attempt can be viewed as an effort to instill diverse understanding to the minds of young children who otherwise wouldn’t have been exposed to such experiences. The effort leverages a generous fund raised by the organization’s Samara fund which contributed $4,000 specifically for introducing these story hours in rural libraries.

Two personalities leading this initiative are Justin Marsh and Kat Redniss, popularly known under their stage names Emoji Nightmare and Katniss Everqueer respectively. They seem to have found a way to connect with children through their stories and personalities. Expressing his emotions on this initiative, Justin Marsh declared it as an important opportunity for rural kids like him who didn’t have access to these experiences during his own childhood years.

Marsh is also an ardent supporter of LGBTQ youth organizations like Outright Vermont. He sees the tremendous value that these organizations offer to the youth by giving them comprehensive insights on gender identities and sexuality. The drag duo believe that their story hours could serve as an initial exposure point where children can identify themselves or their neighbors, offering them a language to express their feelings better.

Supported by an endowment and annual donors, the Fund draws almost all of its support from individuals based in Vermont who are passionate about promoting the rights and welfare of LGBTQ+ individuals and organizations.
