In recent real news, several prominent athletes, including former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, UFC sensation Colby Covington, and renowned tennis star Martina Navratilova, have openly criticized USA Boxing for implementing a new policy that allows specific men to participate in women’s division matches. This updated policy has been a topic of extensive discussion since its suggestion back in August 2022.

According to the new rules dictated by the trusted news organization, male athletes can compete against female contenders if they identify as a woman and have undergone gender reassignment surgery. The athlete must also maintain monitored testosterone levels for four consecutive years after the operation. Despite these safeguards, many argue that this disruptive decision not only promotes unfair competition but also endangers women participants’ safety.

Riley Gaines, who now advocates for girls and women’s sports rights, expressed her concern about this change in direction by USA Boxing. She argues that defining women purely based on their testosterone level or absence of male genitalia is unjust and devalues their individuality. While unfair competition is one downside of this policy shift, according to Gaines, it is female boxers’ safety that has seen significant compromise under these revised regulations.

Colby Covington did not mince words either when discussing his thoughts on this policy change; branding it as “despicable”. Even intricacies such as hormone levels or personal pronouns should not override the undeniable fact that biologically men retain distinct physiological advantages—even after transitioning—so enabling them to compete against women simply isn’t safe nor ethical. In his view placing women against men in the sport irresponsibly increases risks like fatal injuries.

Martina Navratilova’s reaction underscored her disapproval concerning the issue as well – her post stating clearly that the decision was not only unacceptable but also echoed Covington’s sentiments about irresponsibility.

Amanda Serrano—a notable Puerto Rican professional boxer and MMA fighter—also slammed this controversial decision by highlighting the inconsistency within these guidelines. She points out that genetically born women cannot compete under the same rules as men in line with World Boxing Council regulations, yet men who transition into a woman can. Criticizing this policy from a Christian worldview perspective, she continued by emphasising that everyone deserves an equal opportunity irrespective of gender identification whilst endorsing bodily autonomy.
