Renowned for her prosecution efforts against Donald Trump, New York Attorney General Letitia James has newly initiated legal action against one of the largest meat producers globally, JBS Foods. This lawsuit follows allegations where she contends that the company has been misleading consumers. Allegedly, the issue lies in assertions made by the company about reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, all while planning to increase production—and subsequently its carbon footprint.

Letitia James criticized this supposed deceptive promotion as a “greenwashing” tactic designed to mislead customers looking for sustainable options and capitalize on their environmental consciousnesses. Such tactics, she asserted, not only exploit citizens’ pocketbooks but also threaten our planet’s health and future generations. James stressed her commitment to ensuring businesses operate with integrity and transparency without exploiting either consumer trust or environmental sustainability for profit.

For instance, meat isn’t alone under these strict lenses: rice—a crucial staple providing nearly 80% of designated populations’ daily caloric intake—is also being examined closely worldwide. Research indicates that methane from livestock–mostly from belching–, rice paddies and rotting food accounts for about 60 percent of food-related emissions. Additionally, CO2 from machinery transports and nitrous oxide accumulating from excessive chemical fertilizer use both account for another 20 percent each.

Without considerable changes in both diet and agricultural practices according to collected research data—the world’s average surface temperature could dangerously rise between 0.7C – 0.9C by century’s end due solely to global food consumption.
