The political landscape in Minnesota is heating up as Republicans rally for a late-strike campaign aimed at seeing Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) become the next “Squad” member to lose her seat. The squad, famous for its progressive members, recently saw Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) suffer a primary defeat which has further invigorated their political opponents.

The spectators of this engrossing drama are none other than Minnesota voters who will cast the deciding votes in Tuesday’s primary. Interestingly, Omar isn’t facing off against just her Republican rival; she competes against three Democratic contenders too. The election rules allow citizens to vote in any primary regardless of their party affiliation which has triggered strategic maneuvering where local Republicans are urged to back one of Omar’s Democratic challengers due to Dalia Al-Aqidi, the Republican candidate, running unopposed.

This eleventh-hour push was sparked by recent Democrat primaries noting surprising upsets: both Bush and Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) lost their opportunities to secure nominations, with accusations of anti-Israel sentiments driving loyal supporters away.

Omar’s leading challenger is Don Samuels who previously came close to ousting Omar back in 2022 with only a 2,500 votes difference. Originally from Jamaica, Samuels served as a Minneapolis City Councilman and School Board member before campaigning for Congress. Perhaps setting him apart is his more favourable views on Israel compared to Omar who continues to face criticism for her anti-Semitic and anti-Israel comments since taking office in 2019.

Earlier this year Samuels publicly rebuked Omar’s voting position against measures intended curbing Iran despite receiving near-unanimous support among Democrats. According to Samuels website, his stance endorses mainstream Democratic views calling for Hamas’s dismantling while advocating Israel halt construction activities and working towards a two-state solution.

Meanwhile eyeing a wider margin victory, Omar has intensified her fundraising efforts. Her latest campaign financial statement reveals a formidable $6.2 million, whereas Samuels has gathered around $1.4 million.

In another twist to this contentious race, both Bush and Bowman attribute their losses to the United Democracy Project (a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee) which reportedly spent a staggering $24 million to see them defeated. Following losing, Bush issued a public outcry claiming retaliation against these groups.

However, the United Democracy Project remains uninvolved in Omar’s battle thus far. In an interview with media houses, Samuels expressed his belief that AIPAC was “missing an opportunity.”

As politics continues to unfold spectacularly, recent polls suggest Omar leads Samuels by 27 points. However, internal polling from the Samuels campaign exposes a closer contest showing him only slightly behind with over 20% of voters still undecided. Early in-person voting opened since June 28th and with more rounds of political drama expected before Election Day; it’s all up for grabs for the taking.
