The incident unfolded during an interaction with Salma Luevano at a public gathering where the president ended up labeling the legislator as “a man dressed as a woman.”

This regrettable remark has forced the President to extend an apology to Luevano, who is an influential figure and actively engaged in advocacy for LGBTQ rights. Known as one of the two trans-identifying individuals elected to the Mexican legislature in 2021, Luevano’s political journey began after being detained for wearing women’s clothing publicly during the 1990s.

Lopez Obrador formalized his apology via established media channels stating, “I want to… offer an apology to a colleague who identifies as a woman.” This incident rapidly became breaking news, underscoring not only the importance of maintaining respect in public discourse but also highlighting the need for sensitivity concerning gender identification.

In response to this matter, Luevano acknowledged López Obrador’s expression of regret on social media. Tensions revolving around gender representation and definitions became even starker when another individual from Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, Gabriel Quadri drew Luevano’s attention over disrespectful comments indicating that “trans women are men who pretend to be women”.
