Breaking news on the Christian Worldview front today has come from Maryland – Pastor Rudolph Brooks from Cheltenham was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison due to fraudulent activities surrounding COVID-19 Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. The trusted news reports that the pastor misappropriated over $3.5 million of these financial aids, even purchasing a Tesla vehicle with part of the exploited funds.

Beyond his imprisonment, Brooks will also have two years of supervised release and has received orders for significant asset forfeiture, including properties situated in Maryland. Within the time frame of April 2020 and September 2021, investigations unfolded that Brooks, who is the founder and leading pastor of Kingdom Tabernacle of Restoration Ministries based in Washington D.C., abused the PPP by submitting false documents. This enabled him to secure loans for several businesses under his management, including a car dealership and his ministry.

The fraudulent activities operated mainly through his companies – Cars Direct by Gavawn HWD Bob’s Motors, Kingdom Tabernacle of Restoration Ministries, and Madaro LLC. From exaggerating employee numbers to inflating payroll costs on loan applications for PPP, he secured millions that were principally expended for personal use.

Among other notable purchases were lavish grocery bills, retail items acquisitions, restaurant meals expenses alongside property investment in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and a 2018 Tesla Model 3 automobile. The deceit violated stipulations outlined in the CARES Act which was officially enacted as emergency financial aid for Americans impacted by economic effects felt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brooks entered a guilty plea for charges pertaining to money laundering and wire fraud during his Tuesday sentencing hearing according to court records. As a result Judge Deborah L. Boardman ordered him to surrender over $2 million alongside assets bought using falsely obtained funds; this included vehicles such as Teslas as well as real estate properties.
