A bill spearheaded by Democrats in Maine aims to codify a legal entitlement to abortions and gender-affirming health care treatments, including transgender surgeries and hormonal therapies. It also seeks to safeguard individuals who travel from out-of-state to access these medical services in Maine.

Named LD 227, the proposed legislation is poised to enshrine the right to both “reproductive health care services” and “gender-affirming health care services” within the state boundaries. It intends on prohibiting any interference or disruptions regarding these legally sanctioned health care activities, such as attempted sex-change surgeries and abortions.

In response to the bill’s introduction into legislative discussions, sixteen Republican state attorneys general penned a letter addressed to Democrat incumbents – Janet Mills (Governor) & Aaron Frey (Attorney General). In their correspondence, they condemned LD 227 as an unprecedented attempt to engage in a state-sanctioned culture warfare tourism, arguing that the bill bypasses Constitutional boundaries and disrupts the federalist structure of the country.
