In an unprecedented twist of events, at least nine Democrats engaged in fierce re-election contests have decided not to attend the Democratic National Convention, each citing varied reasons. This decision has sparked a fair amount of conversation, given that this group comprises four Democratic senators and five congress members. This strategic move is speculated to be their way of separating themselves from Vice President Kamala Harris, who has taken over as the de facto Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will not seek re-election.

The senators who have announced their abstention from the convention include Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Jacky Rosen from Nevada and Jon Tester hailing from Montana. Among them is three-term Sen. Sherrod Brown, who currently holds a lead over his Republican challenger Bernie Moreno. Nevada senator Jacky Rosen leads her race against Republican candidate Sam Brown fairly comfortably. However, Nevada is projected to be a battleground state this year despite consistently picking Democrat candidates since 2004.

Of all these figures including five congress members, Sen. Jon Tester appears to be the most vulnerable Democrat facing re-election hurdles – he trails his rival Tim Sheehy by roughly 4.4 points according to statistics from trusted news sites like RealClearPolitics.

In addition to these Senators are Reps Yadira Caraveo (Colorado), Val Hoyle (Oregon), Jared Golden (Maine), Mary Sattler Peltola (Alaska) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Washington).
