It’s been a devastating day for Israel, showcasing not only the atrocities of war but also the inherent risks Israel knowingly confronts on a regular basis. Three hostages were unexpectedly killed in Shejaiya, a breeding ground for terrorists and suicide bombers. IDF soldiers, caught up in the heart of battle, perceived three figures scurrying as if they were adversaries and discharged their weapons. These hostages had either fled amidst the combat or had been deserted by Hamas terrorists during the chaos. This sorrowful incident coincides with another unlucky episode where 10 IDF elite forces were ambushed whilst inspecting a house.

Both these heart-rending occurrences mirror Israel’s resolve to spare every non-Hamas life possible while waging war against an unrelenting adversary that unveiled its malevolent nature on October 7 and continues to exploit hostages and civilians as living barricades. Observing the sanctity of human life, IDF shows courage by jeopardizing its own troop’s lives by meticulously clearing residences one after another within Gaza.

No military force globally has ever engaged such warfare before. It’s unprecedented how a nation restrains its own actions to conserve enemy civilian lives. With historical events like Dresden bombing causing up to 250k civilian deaths, Iraq war causing over 300k, or atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki resulting between 100-200k deaths; it is evident how non-combatant casualties have always been one of the direst consequences of any conflict.

Nevertheless, despite exposing itself to grave dangers, Israeli forces express unwavering commitment to preventing collateral damage akin to those seen in Dresden or Hiroshima. As we grieve innocent loss of lives, we must also pay tribute to Israel – A nation so resolute about preserving lives that it puts her own troops at risk whilst undergoing painstaking house-clearance process just for ensuring safety over taking an easy route for safeguarding her soldiers.

Indeed, it couldn’t be any more true that while Israel shields her civilians with her army, Hamas, in contrast, shields its army with its civilians. In honor of the innocent lives lost, we remember and pay homage to Israel’s bravery and commitment demonstrated every day during this conflict. The sacrifices made to save even a single life is a testament to their Christian worldview which emphasizes the sanctity of each human life.
