House Republicans have accused Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of directly instigating the current crisis at the southern border during the first public impeachment hearing for a Biden administration official. Green continued to express outrage over witnessing historically high influxes of unauthorized migrants crossing our borders since early 2021. Besides these record encounter rates, including an unprecedented monthly peak of 302,000 incidents in December 2021, at least 1.8 million people have slipped into the United States without being intercepted.

It was also emphasized that a significant number among those apprehended were later released and assigned court dates due years ahead. Mayorkas stated on Monday that about 85% of encounters with immigrants at the frontier resulted in their release into America. Green criticizes Mayorkas over large-scale releases indicating that he permitted over 1.5 million unauthorized entrants into America.

According to Green, this crisis hasn’t sprung up randomly but has been intentional – stating there haven’t been any unprecedented problems arising within Latin American countries leading to such increases in numbers. He pointed out how Secretary Mayorkas ignored testimony from President Biden’s Attorney General Merrick Garland acknowledging that present strategies are being exploited by criminal syndicates while choosing to reinforce policies enhancing ‘catch and release’ measures – further empowering criminal networks behind illegal immigration.

Republicans maintain that Secretary Mayorkas has repeatedly misled public opinion regarding his handling of this border crisis and ignored obligations to secure it. GOP representative Clay Higgins (R-LA) asserted that the House would impeach Mayorkas, stating his impeachment was inevitable and entirely justified.

In contrast, Democrats have steadfastly defended Secretary Mayorkas, dismissing accusations of any impeachable misunderstandings.
