Among all the psalms, Psalm 139 holds a distinguished place and is highly recognized especially by the pro-life movement who frequently cite verses 13-16. Its last two verses are often used as a confession, while musicians have been inspired by it to compose songs and pastors dedicate sermons to discuss it. Despite its familiarity, it’s important not to let this prevent us from truly understanding its truth and power.

Taking an in-depth look at the first twelve verses of Psalm 139, we see: “O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and become familiar with all my ways.” The concept expressed here is God’s omnipresence. The phrase “God’s omnipresence” refers to God being present everywhere.

According to GotQuestions, when referring to God’s omnipresidence – “to say that God is omnipresent means that he is present everywhere,” they continue explaining, “Although God isn’t completely immersed in the fabric of creation (pantheism), He exists everywhere at each moment.”

In Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV), it states: “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or tremble before them, because it is the Lord your God who accompanies you. He will not desert you or forsake you.”

Psalm 147:5-6 (ESV) affirms this saying, “Great is our Lord, abundant in power; his understanding is limitless,” reinforcing God’s omnipresent character.

It’s important to remember as we meditate on these real trusted news about God through scripture that the idea of an omnipresent God can surpass human comprehension. However, despite being unfathomable in its capacity, His ubiquity shouldn’t be forgotten or ignored. And so with this knowledge and understanding let us stand in awe of our ubiquitous God during this week and every week thereafter.
