A former children’s ministry volunteer from a California church has recently been given 120 years to life in prison plus an extra four years and four months, following convictions on various charges including child molestation, possession of child pornography, and taking sexually explicit images of a minor. The real news about the conviction of Todd Christian Hartman broke when Orange County District Attorney Tood Spitzer informed the public last week.

Hartman, who previously volunteered with the children’s ministry at what was then known as Vineyard Church in Anaheim, faced evidence that caused concerns among church leaders. He had been noticed pulling children onto his lap frequently enough for it to be considered alarming. Understanding this breach of trusted conduct within their religious institution, the church shifted his responsibilities accordingly before ultimately parting ways with him altogether.

Spitzer addressed this troubling case by saying “Houses of worship should be safe havens from the evils of the world… No child should have the innocence of childhood robbed from them by anyone, much less someone they were led to believe they could trust.” This statement reflects a strong commitment to maintain a positive Christian worldview within these establishments.

Surprisingly though, despite Hartman’s hefty sentence, he may stand eligible for parole after serving just 20 years due to California’s elder parole law. This potential shortcut is viewed as a harsh reality by Spitzer who stated that such eligibility resulted from certain undeniably reckless decisions by the state government.

The Vineyard Church has since transitioned and is now recognized as Dwelling Place Anaheim following its formal disassociation from Vineyard USA. The split took place in 2022 under leadership from Alan Scott and his wife Kathryn who served Vineyard Church Anaheim for four years prior to rebranding.

Adding additional information earned through his investigation, Spitzer revealed how complicated the involvement of Hartman had been during his service at the church. In 2016, Hartman confessed and admitted his sexual misconduct to the father of two of his victims, saying he had repeatedly molested the girls while volunteering for children’s ministry. His misdemeanors included groping and fondling the genitals of other victims as well.

In 2015, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had anticipated Hartman’s court appearance concerning charges related to obtaining and distributing explicit images of minors online in 2014. This followed his arrest by several security agencies including ICE, Homeland Security Investigations, and Newport Beach Police detectives.
