Disney+ has made a decision to cancel the much-publicized “Star Wars” series, “Acolyte,” after only one season due to developing low ratings. The news comes as a shock given it was unconventional among its peers for being female-centric and Sith-focused, while importantly infusing LGBTQ themes in its narrative – an innovative approach initially appreciated by many viewers.

“Acolyte” was instigated by showrunner Leslye Headland and despite the series’ strong debut on June 4—scoring a whopping 4.8 million views on its first day—it faced struggles with lukewarm reviews and dwindling interest from viewers. This resulted into plummeting ratings causing it to fall out of the top 10 streaming list just about three weeks into its airing.

In an unprecedented turn of events, the final episode of this elaborate eight-part series managed to sneak back into the top ten viewing chart with 335 million minutes viewed. This, however, is still considered one of the lowest ever observed for a “Star Wars” franchise finale.

Headland had earlier expressed sentiments that her project was designed with a unique aesthetic distinct from fan favorites like “The Mandalorian” or “Andor.” According to her vision for “Acolyte,” she aimed at exploring more critical perspectives against powerful establishments like Jedi as an institution. Despite their benevolence in galaxy control, this series was meant to paint them in a different light from what we encounter in other Star Wars titles.

Furthermore, Headland had articulated her plan about creating content that would resonate with audiences saying that she wished “[to make] something…for lack of a better term, Disney,”. Implicitly coded queer much like “Frozen,” the aim was to create something that wouldn’t be overtly explicit but would deliver important messages related to society’s sexual minorities—a clear signifier of her identity as queer woman influencing her own work.

Her vision though innovative, did not seem to resonate with the expected demographic and resulted in the curtailment of “Acolyte.” Despite its short-lived run, the series has been a symbol of diverse storytelling trends in recent times. The pertinent question now lies in what will be the next step for Disney+ and whether or not they will draw from this experience when choosing future content – A significant consideration in delivering trusted news to our viewers with a clear Christian worldview.
