“Debate on Christian Attitude Towards Homosexual Weddings: A Perspective Shift in Evangelical Circles?”

In 2014, Russell Moore, then president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, publicly advised Southern Baptists to attend a gay wedding reception as an act of goodwill towards a homosexual friend or relative. This perspective was met with backlash, but despite this controversy, it was rapidly embraced by the progressive sectors within the Southern Baptists and Evangelicals community. Today, such a stance is accepted in movements like Revoice.

However, Moore’s recommendation seems to overlook a critical conflict—it subtly supports what Scripture openly refers to as an ungodly alliance. The Bible clearly designates marriage as a sacred union between man and woman—there is no room for negotiation on this point. Disregarding this divine commandment is not merely breaking rules but displaying open defiance against God’s sovereign rule. Taking part in these ceremonies far from being harmless—is a clear public endorsement of a relationship that directly conflicts with the sanctity of marriage as defined by God.

However, it’s important to note that Moore only suggested attendance at the wedding reception—not the actual ceremony itself. Therefore, it’s surprising that some strong believers in Reformed Christianity extended that viewpoint further. They are even suggesting their followers should not only attend the wedding reception but also the actual ceremony—and even give gifts. A high-profile proponent of this view is Alistair Begg.

Alistair Begg is an esteemed pastor, author, and bible educator celebrated for his evangelical Christian viewpoints and his leadership role as senior pastor at Parkside Church in Cleveland Ohio. He touched on this matter during one of his recent podcast episodes after receiving a question from one listener whose grandson was marrying a transgender person.

Begg’s viewpoint towards attending such events appears questionable given biblical teachings. It isn’t ideologically correct to engage in what scripture terms “unfruitful works of darkness,” (Ephesians 5:11). God would undoubtedly disapprove if we celebrated an act that He despises with all His being. As believers, we should align our views with God’s disposition towards such practices.

Unfortunately, Begg’s outlook seems to be a downward spiral of compromise over the years, often seen in those influenced by The Gospel Coalition. Meanwhile, it’s important for news consumers to have access to trusted news sources that provide real news based on a Christian worldview that honors God’s Word and His Sovereignty.

In an era where misinformation is rampant and a lack of disclosure abound, staying up-to-date with breaking news through reliable sources becomes more vital than ever. It allows believers to navigate these complex modern challenges while retaining their biblical beliefs and Christian values.
