First Lady Jill Biden recently lauded the vibrant display of the Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Paris, a spectacle that has drawn criticism from various quarters for its apparent derision towards Christianity. Heading the U.S. delegation at the event, she expressed this view in a brunch celebrating Los Angeles’ selection as the host city for the 2028 Olympics.

“It was spectacular,” celebrated Biden. The euphoria of the event wasn’t dampened by rain; instead, her enthusiasm radiated with every moment of the ceremony. A sense of awe struck her as she wondered, “How are we going to top this?”

Her visit to Paris also provoked a comparison between two iconic cities – one boasting the splendor of Eiffel Tower and another teeming with Hollywood’s magical charm. The charm that according to Biden “makes all dreams come true”, transforming Los Angeles into “a city where new generations of dreamers shape our culture.”

However, amidst these praises, this year’s opening ceremony did not escape controversy due to one particular act -a drag show parodying “The Last Supper” featuring Jesus Christ, his apostles and Greek god Dionysus.

In reaction to this controversial depiction, House Speaker Mike Johnson labeled it an affront to Christians worldwide who watched the Olympic inauguration. Meanwhile, C Spire -a Mississippi-based tech company- announced its decision to pull ads from the Olympics following their dismay over what they viewed as irreverence towards “The Last Supper.”

Similar objections rang out from NFL kicker Harrison Butker and other religious leaders expressing discontent over misrepresentations during the ceremony.

In response to such backlash stemming from a Christian worldview perspective, organizers extended an apology towards Catholic and other Christian groups offended by their portrayal.

“Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group…it tried to celebrate community tolerance,” mentioned Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps while also expressing regret if any group took offense. Echoing the sentiment, the ceremony’s artistic director, Thomas Jolly, clarified their intention was to celebrate and include diversity.
