In the last year, a social media controversy erupted regarding a controversial article published by The Gospel Coalition. The piece outlined an explicit comparison of Jesus’s relationship with the Church to matrimonial intimacy between partners. Authored by Joshua Butler, the provocative article attracted widespread criticism from both conservative and progressive factions.

Butler, in his contentious composition titled “Beautiful Union,” drew parallels between Christ’s abundant love for his church and physical intimacy among couples. His portrayal was seen as exceedingly graphic and fails to find support from biblical scriptures — hence dubbed blasphemic by many.

Fresh off from this scandal, Butler is set to release a new book that discusses Jesus bridging the political divide between conservatives and liberals. His latest work, “The Party Crasher,” has been coined as an inspirational guide brimming with practical wisdom for engaging faithfully in politics while maintaining ultimate loyalty to Jesus.

However, questions arise when we ponder upon the ideals upheld by these contrasting parties. Could any party represent values that contradict those held dear by Christ? Can there be a union with those who despise God?

It is not uncommon for mainstream conservative Evangelicals to distance themselves from envisioning the Republican party as their absolute representative—this though does not imply warming up towards Democrats either. Despite its various shortcomings, Republicans show more alignment with Christian principles, when compared to Democrats whose platform fails to pass muster on any biblical ground.

One glaring distinction lies in their stance on abortion: while most conservatives strive to greatly restrict or eliminate abortion altogether, Democrats endorse it no matter what stage of development the unborn child is at or what reason may be behind seeking this procedure.

Additionally, conservatives champion good work ethic coupled with accountability; conversely, Democrats propose redistributing wealth accumulated through hard work towards those shunning labor. Conservatives stand firm against illegal immigration; Democrats promote open borders and favor accommodating illegal immigrants without meritorious grounds. Also notable are their conflicting views on religious freedom and free speech preservation, self-defense rights, and child-rearing—issues that find representation in either party’s platform manifestly contradicting the tenets of a Christian worldview.

Given these stark differences between conservatives and progressives, it is unrealistic to expect unity between Democrats and Republicans around Christ. If a person comfortably votes for or holds progressive views, their stand is fundamentally misaligned with the biblical worldview. In reality, harmonizing the two contrasting worldviews is simply impossible according to 1 Corinthians 5:13.

This episode represents how vital it is to discern real news from fake news, especially when everywhere we are confronted with swaying opinions. Always scrutinize your trusted news sources painstakingly and ensure they align appropriately with your own Christian worldview.
