In light of the ongoing hostage crisis in Gaza, various Christian groups recently launched a campaign aimed at Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the mother of Qatar’s Emir. This initiative encourages her to utilize her influence to assist in releasing hostages held captive. A billboard depicting bint Nasser and an Israeli infant hostage has been seen in Times Square, New York City, captioned “It’s in your hands” and “Release the hostages”.

The ItsInYourHands coalition made up of Christian leaders and organizations powers this campaign. Its tireless efforts from October 2023 aim to provide support for families affected by the hostage situation. American television host and singer Kathie Lee Gifford has highlighted bint Nasser’s potential role in shortening this hostage nightmare via an emotive video appeal.

At 64 years old, bint Nasser is a prominent figure within Qatar. Her influential roles include being the Chairwoman of the Qatar Foundation and Qatar Luxury Group. While considered a humanitarian by many, others condemn her silence about detained individuals, which includes eight Americans out of 136 people held captive in Gaza.

Amidst holding U.S.’s largest military base in their region, Qatar creates international concerns due its support for Hamas and control over Al-Jazeera; a medium renowned for promoting anti-American and anti-Israel propaganda.

Shortly after Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th of last year, bint Nasser came under scrutiny because of her social media activity—including endorsing Hamas propaganda—leaving experts questioning her dedication to championing hostages’ release.

Members from ItsInYourHands have expressed doubts concerning bint Nasser’s commitment towards the freeing of these prisoners. They note despondence as her focus seems affixed on preventing catastrophe within Gaza rather than addressing larger conflict issues.

The website reads: “Sheikha Moza bint Nasser presents herself as a champion for multiple humanitarian causes; however, her silence regarding the hostage crisis and failure to leverage her influence for their liberation is alarming.”

Promoting education and women’s rights are among bint Nasser’s touted efforts, yet her lack of commentary on the Gaza hostages casts a grim shadow over these achievements. An online petition by ItsInYourHands has garnered well over 5,000 signatures and is moving steadily towards its 7,500 target.

There has been criticism towards Qatar’s ongoing support for Hamas from individuals like Douglas Murray, an associate editor of The Spectator. He has highlighted the irony of Hamas leaders enjoying grandiose lifestyles in Doha using international aid intended for Gaza residents.
