Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Trenton, a highly respected Roman Catholic charity located in New Jersey, has received criticism for facilitating a book reading that appears to challenge traditional gender notions. The session in question spotlighted the book “My Shadow Is Purple.” The reading was held at the Hamilton Township Public Library and meant for an audience primarily composed of children. This isn’t the first time Scott Stuart has invited controversies with his works. A notable incident occurred last year when a teacher who read “My Shadow is Purple” was sacked after parents protested against the book. His other novel, “My Shadow Is Pink,” which seeks to challenge male stereotypes through its protagonist embracing femininity, attracted international attention when parents withdrew their child from an English primary school promoting it.

Notably, Transgender Trend, a policy group, rejected the themes proposed by Stuart’s book as they could be considered misleading and confusing for children. They argue that suggesting the notion of changing one’s gender by merely altering hairstyles or apparel undermines children’s basic understanding of biology.
