The third Sunday of January has been recognized as the National Sanctity of Human Life Day since its inception on January 22, 1984, under the leadership of President Ronald Reagan. As we commemorate the 40th anniversary of this important day, renowned for its focus on celebrating human life and particularly paying respect to unborn lives, it’s pivotal that we discuss its relevance from a broader Christian worldview. This perspective presents us not only with valuable historical context but also highlights unparalleled developments in our understanding of and approach to human life over these four decades.

Over time, advancements like sonogram technology have revolutionized our perception towards human growth within the womb. By respecting science’s undeniable assertion regarding the status of an embryo as more than just a clump of cells but actually a growing human life, it aids directly in positive strides forward for the pro-life movement.

Breakthroughs such as overturning Roe v. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2022 mark significant milestones in legally reinforcing protection for unborn children – amending this landmark decision materializes our long-standing conviction that abortion rights do not categorically fall under constitutional guarantee.

However, approaching abortion purely through political lenses risks shadowing its complex theological and spiritual dimensions. Some sections even associate tackling abortion with taking measures around immigration policies, healthcare reforms or poverty alleviation. Such generalizations often dilute opposition against abortions based on their inherent wrongness leading to unproductive ‘whataboutism’. Countering this calls for clear understanding on why Christians need to stand firmly against abortions.

Firstly, scripturally depicted attributes point towards God being undeniably associated with life- it is He who brings all creatures into existence thus making a world where death remains non-existent until sin infiltrates – aligning closely with teachings from Romans 5:12-14 and John’s Gospel. Therefore any act categorizing abortion as legitimate or good is essentially an offending act against God’s nature and character.

Secondly, throughout scriptures, we find a divine significance assigned to children as exempflied by Jesus Himself (Luke 18:15-17). Children are among God’s most cherished creations; treating them otherwise does not resonate with the path of Christ. This emphasizes why Christians must actively oppose any form of violence against unborn children.

Lastly, in line with teachings from Psalms 41:1, Psalm 82:3-4 and Proverbs 24:11 where one is called upon to defend the vulnerable, Christians are urged to safeguard those who cannot fend for themselves – mostly children birthed or unborn.

Coming together on this National Sanctity of Human Life Day, importance lies not just on paying reverence to life but more importantly understanding why we value life and subsequently standing against infractions affecting it like abortion. A vision towards a society rooted within these real truths brings us closer to creating a world reflecting Christian teachings prioritizing love for life since it intrinsically defines our love for Christ.
