Last week, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued an executive order and draft administrative rules that seem to be stepping into controversial territory. The Republican Governor has effectively prohibited gender-transition surgeries for minors within the state, a strategic move coming hot on the heels of his Dec. 29 veto of House Bill 68, otherwise known as the Saving Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act.

This ambitious bill was designed with two primary objectives in mind: to shield minors from potentially irreversible, experimental surgeries and cross-sex hormones until they reach adulthood; and to prevent biological males identifying as females from participating in girls’ and women’s scholastic athletics.

Governor DeWine’s decision unfortunately undermines these objectives by prioritizing political correctness over what could be seen as beneficial protection measures for children. His actions have been met with considerable criticism, with numerous proponents arguing his stance compromises the safety and fairness of women’s sports.

Sarah Parshall Perry, legal scholar at a globally recognized institution has taken issue with DeWine’s decision. Perry argue that despite the heated debate surrounding this topic, national polls indicate that an overwhelming 70% of Americans agree with the principles outlined in HB 68.

It appears that Americans in wide consensus support both aspects of the contested bill: they believe children should not hastily undergo gender-transition procedures, and male-born athletes should not compete in female sporting events. Despite this public support; however, Governor DeWine seems inclined towards appeasing a vocal minority who insist on blanket acceptance of transgender rights without critical discussion or consideration for potential fallouts.

In defense of his decisions, Governor DeWine claims —without evidence— that his own actions would fare better against judicial review than HB 68 would. Critics suggest he may be sorely mistaken and are actively encouraging Ohio lawmakers to exercise a veto override before outcomes possibly detrimental to women’s sports -and minors considering drastic medical treatments early- become evident due to his actions framed as “political correctness”.
