The potential for contempt proceedings against Hunter Biden was announced on Friday by Republican House Representatives, following Biden’s no-show to a confidential interview. This step forms part of the ongoing inquiry into the Biden family.

James Comer (R-KY), the Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, indicated that his panel, in collaboration with the House Judiciary Committee overseen by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), would initiate meetings for considering a motion to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress. This decision comes after Hunter failed to attend a deposition session with congressional investigators in the previous month, stipulating instead that he would only reply to queries in a public setting.

Comer and Jordan expressed their frustration at Hunter’s absence stating, “Our investigation has uncovered considerable evidence implying that President Biden was aware of his family monetizing their surname. We intended to probe Hunter about these proof-points but he opted to sidestep two legal subpoenas. Rather than attending as required for testimony, he chose to read out a pre-written statement outside the Capitol.”

A congregation scheduled for January 10 at 10:00 am EST will take place at the Rayburn House Office Building where further discussions will occur.

Comer and Jordan further commented on Hunter’s outright refusal stating “Hunter Biden’s deliberate evasion of our subpoenas illustrates contempt for Congress and should be sent for prosecution to an appropriate United States Attorney’s Office. We are adamant there’ll be no preferential treatment because of his familial ties.”

Hunter had showed up at U.S. Capitol Building amidst calls from Republicans legislators demanding an audience with him, challenging Comer directly to permit him an appearance at a public hearing rather than privately answering what he deemed were “valid” questions.

Biden’s attorney had previously proposed this course of action several times over which led Comer to stipulate his satisfaction lies only in Biden giving deposition–while maintaining receptivity towards permitting Biden’s appearance at future open hearings.

However, the Oversight Committee’s ranking member, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), voiced criticism at Comer’s announcement. He raised concerns over the lack of precedent where a private citizen offering to testify publicly in total honesty and on the committee’s timeframe is held ‘in contempt of Congress’.

In addition to this, Jordan and Comer are investigating whether President Joe Biden hindered their probe by encouraging Hunter not to cooperate with deposition requests.
