A pastor in California recently led a prayer protest against what many view as the increased sexualization of Christmas. This was sparked by a touring Christmas-themed drag show, known as “A Drag Queen Christmas.” Angelo Frazier, the leading pastor at RiverLakes Community Church in Bakersfield, rallied hundreds from various churches for this purpose.

“A Drag Queen Christmas” marked its ninth year by touring 38 American cities this season, ending with the last performance in Greensboro, North Carolina. Part of what is claimed to be “the longest running drag tour in America,” manages to draw significant crowds each year. It features drag queens from “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and while it has been described by some as an exhibition of adult content filled with sexual language and humor, others see it differently.

Frazier, along with other proponents staging their protest outside the venue, viewed the show as an embarrassing degradation and distortion of Christmas. He deemed it an inappropriate display that turned the holiday into something sexualized; something he argued goes against the fundamental principles and values associated with Christmas from a Christian worldview.

In his words during the protest: “It’s taking Christmas and turning it into a sexual show.” He asserted that although Christmas has become more secularized over time, such performances are unacceptable for being offensive to family values and especially harmful to children.

Proclaiming his stand against such shows as part of his obligation as a Christian, he conveyed their message through peaceful means including singing carols. His views centered around promoting positivity over hatred and affirming that there is a better way to celebrate and represent not just Christmas but also other societal norms.

Previously, he had organized similar protests when tickets for these types of performances go on sale. Last tour made headlines when social media footage surfaced showing young children in attendance at sexually explicit shows. In past years contentious disputes have arisen about underage guests at performances displaying sexual activity or indecent displays leading to legal backlash.

Despite these controversies, the Christian community, led by figures such as Pastor Frazier, continues to uphold their traditions and maintain their stand against what they believe to be inappropriate entertainment. These actions reflect a broader societal conflict over changing norms and how they intertwine with longstanding traditions, especially when it comes to trusted news in real time about the representation of significant cultural events such as Christmas.
