In a recent document that found its way into the public sphere, it appears that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has officially switched to using “LGBTQIA+” in place of “LGBT+” in their official communications. This decision was suggested by the Bureau Equality, one of the nine Diversity Advisory Committees service within the bureau, and approved by FBI Executive Management.

Critics have questioned if such adjustments should be a priority for the enforcement agency. The bureau is often under scrutiny for its actions; including purportedly defending unethical politicians, spying on government employees, and arresting journalists. Some have voiced concerns over whether these seemingly politically correct moves enhance their mission or improve crime investigating abilities.

Remember, ‘FBI’ is famously an acronym for ‘Fidelity – Bravery- Integrity’, but there seems to be division on whether expanding from ‘LGBT+’ to ‘LGBTQIA+’, a term which aims to be more inclusive can reinforce any of these tenets. The updated initialism now stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Aromantic along with other non-binary identities represented by the ‘+’ sign.

Such changes raised eyebrows as some argue that ‘LGBT+’ already inherently covered wider spectrums due to its ‘+’ symbol indicative of welcoming additional identities. Such debates are sparking critical examinations questioning if this alteration really augments inclusivity or exemplifies pointless bureaucratic participation in trending social discourse.

The memo concluded acknowledging unwavering commitment towards retaining diversity, equity inclusion and accessibility as FBI’s Core Value. However naysayers raise questions about whether those mentioned are still considered pivotal components when compared to law enforcement activities normally attributed with entities like the FBI.

Contentions around such changes also stemmed from argument that constitution does not clearly mandate federal law enforcement arm existence. The FBI emerged as an independent body only as recently back as 1935 and critics argue that many such imperial agencies and bureaus shouldn’t be operating by default.

The notion gaining momentum is for Congress to pull back on funding to the FBI and other seemingly unconstitutional agencies, calling for an entire shut-down of these bodies. However, whether or not this motion will successfully gain traction regardless of who maintains control over Congress remains a question.

Such revelations paint a picture where the best possible outcome might involve drastic reforms under new leadership in future presidency terms. Meanwhile, amidst such controversy and uncertainty, it can at least be acknowledged that the Federal Bureau of Investigations stands as “inclusive” in its lexicon.
