As suggested by a series of recent incidents and public comments, advocates for such restrictions believe that unchecked freedom of information obstructs their ideological goals or desired power dynamics. The trend can no longer be dismissed as an overstatement, as observers will note the potency and potential implications involved in this issue.

High-profile figures within leftist circles have openly conveyed sentiments aimed at restricting access to information from both sides of the political spectrum. For example, John Kerry, ex-presidential candidate and previous Secretary of State under President Obama’s tenure, has been quite direct with his provocative critiques on the most foundational democratic right.

However, Kerry isn’t alone in expressing such thoughts; other influencers like former Clinton Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have voiced similar sentiments, each echoing calls for limitations on free speech albeit with varying degrees of specificity.

Kerry’s words were most prominently highlighted during a World Economic Forum panel on green energy held on September 25. The crux of his argument revolved around the idea that social media’s ever-increasing unpopularity was partly to blame for broader societal issues — particularly those affecting democracies trying to reach consensus on any matter.

Expressing nostalgia for less competitive times when select major networks and newspapers significantly influenced public opinion, Kerry lamented about how advancements in technology and increase in alternatives sources have scattered people’s news interests. This “self-selection”, according to him, hampers efforts to establish consensus today more than at any point in past decades.

Further expatiating his perspective, he indicated that entities spreading disinformation shielded by First Amendment rights pose certain challenges requiring serious discussion. His preferred solution involves winning enough votes to secure undisputed governance which warrants implementing change as needed.

Echoing a similar stance albeit through different rhetoric, Robert Reich discussed his desire to muzzle select sources of information he deemed improper. In an article on The Guardian, he criticized Elon Musk, arguing that the entrepreneur’s potential influence in a hypothetical second Trump term could warrant global regulatory attention.

Ocasio-Cortez has mapped her own path through this discourse, albeit with less precision compared to Kerry or Reich. Despite having been called out for spreading false information by fact-checking websites like PolitiFact, the congressman believes certain sections of media need reining in if they continue to disseminate misleading content.

These controversial comments made by prominent American politicians should not be interpreted in isolation. Instead, they should be understood within the context of a sustained attempt curbing freedom of information happening across various nations including Brazil, the United Kingdom and Canada amongst others.
