In another round of the ongoing conflict, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari spotlighted the real news of Hezbollah’s plot to invade Israel and conduct a massacre similar to that instigated by Hamas on October 7, 2023. On the international front, he noted how United Nations Security Council resolutions over many years have implored Lebanon to ensure their territory isn’t occupied by unauthorized armed groups. With special emphasis on UN Security Council Resolution 1701 from 2006 mutually agreed upon by both Israel and Lebanon which states clearly that southern Lebanon must only house government-operated armed personnel, assets, and weapons; not any non-governmental entity.

Highlighting an unfortunate evolution nearly two decades after resolution 1701 came into effect; today Hezbollah stands as the world’s most significant non-state army with southern Lebanon teeming with Hezbollah militants and arms. “If neither Lebanon nor global powers can prevent Hezbollah from encroaching our borders we are left with no option but to take matters into our own hands,” asserted Hagari emphasizing IDF’s commitment towards protecting its civilian population.

The IDF reiterated that the ongoing war is essentially against Hezbollah, and not ordinary Lebanese citizens. The spokesman ensured that their aim was not to harm innocent civilians in Lebanon, but acknowledged defensive measures were deemed essential for national security. Hagari concluded by reiterating that Israel will not tolerate a recurrence of the horrors of October 7th and would take necessary steps to ensure Israeli families can return to their safe and secure homes.
