In a bid to fortify against foreign influences in U.S. elections, the Department of Justice (DOJ) initiated an investigation this month into individuals linked with Russian state media, as reported by trusted news outlets.

Part of the investigation involved recent raids conducted by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Homes of former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter and 2016 Trump campaign adviser Dimitri K. Simes were searched on Aug. 7 and 13 respectively. Both Ritter and Simes have establishable connections with Russia’s state-run television networks.

The real news is that focus is given to the potential violation of a requirement for lobbyists to reveal their association with foreign nations, alongside potential infringements on economic sanctions aimed at Russia.

Simes has made regular appearances on a popular Russian television show ‘The Great Game’, co-hosted with Vyacheslav Nikonov, who is known for his strong support towards Kremlin policies and was originally mentored by Stalin’s protege Vyacheslav Molotov.

Born in Soviet-era territory but now an American citizen, Simes offered counsel to Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign. In response to allegations surrounding him, Simes denies any wrongdoing and protests that the DOJ probe appears more like an “attempt to intimidate not only someone from Russia but anyone opposed to official policies especially those concerning the deep state.”

Similarly, Scott Ritter contends language claiming him as a staunch defender of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine based on strong Christian worldview principles forming part of his argument. The Times reports him believing his views have potentially caught the attention of larger national security interests beyond generic allegations being hurled at him.

Ritter further articulated concerns about being viewed as an active conspirator against U.S. interests solely because he stands up for his views, expressing fears over being unfairly labeled as a disinformation weapon due to his standpoint.

Accordingly, this development follows closely after the DOJ’s Jul. 9 declaration of unearthing and taking efforts to restrain a Russian influence campaign. The plan, deployed using AI-enhanced social media bot farms purportedly designed to weaken international backing for Ukraine while politically polarising countries such as the U.S., Europe, and Israel.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence earlier stated that Moscow was potentially utilizing Russia-based influence handlers seeking to shape public opinion within the United States in order to meddle with election outcomes.
