The upcoming US elections have positioned Democrats and Republicans in an intense face-off, the ferocity of which is reminiscent of America’s battle for independence against England, says former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In a recent interview with trusted news broadcaster MSNBC, Pelosi drew this striking parallel as she expressed her concerns about President Donald Trump being a potent threat to democracy.

As the Democratic National Convention moved into its last day in Chicago, Pelosi renewed warnings issued by several DNC speakers, hammering home the notion that Trump’s potential re-election could be perilous for American democracy. “We have to win over someone posing an unprecedented risk to our democratic structure,” stated Pelosi. She invoked the perspective of historical figures like Thomas Paine and Abraham Lincoln to illustrate her point: “In our country’s infancy,” she recalls Paine having said, “‘The times have found us — declare war, establish a new nation.’ Lincoln embraced this call later to keep our nation united.”

“The times furthermore have found us needing to safeguard our democracy,” she added. “That’s why we’re here.” However, her comments were swiftly rebuffed by the Trump team, who labeled them as ‘unhinged.’

Online ticket sales are ongoing for theater productions across various locations including “Am I Racist?”

Reacting strongly against Pelosi’s statements, the Trump campaign asserted on platform X that it was apparent Democrats were hinting at potential political violence if President Trump succeeds in winning the election.

Pelosi has recurrently used Thomas Paine’s line “The times have found us” while speaking out against Trump over the past five years. In 2019 for example, she shared an image depicting herself boldly countering President Trump during an official meeting between Democratic leaders and members of the Trump administration.

“During America’s Revolution’s most trying times,” Pelosi had stated back then, “Thomas Paine declared: ‘The times have found us.’ Today too these challenging times summon us to defend our democracy.” With a sobering tone, she remarked “It’s an obligation we owe to our children; a tribute to the countless Americans who laid down their lives defending this nation.”

The Democratic National Convention will conclude later today with Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepting her party’s nomination and addressing fellow Democrats. Pelosi’s influence was reportedly instrumental in persuading current President Joe Biden to discontinue his 2024 campaign and support Harris as the new candidate.

When queried about Biden’s withdrawal from the race and her relationship with him earlier this week, Pelosi stated, “At times one has to endure blows for the sake of our children. I just did what needed doing.” She added that her actions were driven by concerns about his campaign rather than Biden personally.
