A Californian high school has denied a recent report indicating that it allows students to change their gender without parental involvement. Despite internal documents stating that parents are not necessity for ages 12 and up, Newport-Mesa Unified School District denies any lack of parental involvement in the process.

An earlier report had mentioned that the district allows students to complete gender support plans which outline procedures for a child’s social transition at school without obtaining consent from parents. This report was challenged by Newport Harbor High School, terming it as an attack on the support they give to their LGBTQ+ community.

In response to the accusations, the school maintained its stance saying, “We do not refer students for gender-affirming care, nor do we have gender support plans without parental involvement. The student-driven resources are intended to complement the essential role that parents play in their children’s lives.” They cautioned against sharing misinformation on social media which could proliferate false claims or target teachers and programs negatively.

However, evidence suggests otherwise with proof showing no requirement for parental involvement for students aged 12 and above across district schools. A document detailing this “Student Gender Support” process was obtained through a public records request illuminating this stand.

While recommending parental involvement is highly suggested for all ages under district guidelines, it remains mandatory only for children aged 11 and younger. If children younger than 11 express preference against involving their parents, however, the district affirms they will proceed in supporting the student regardless.

Internal emails leaked by Center for American Liberty revealed further proof of this standpoint. Sarah Coley, the administrative director of student services recommended keeping parents aware of a child’s transgender status but only if permitted by the child themselves.

The law in California does underscore this state of affairs allowing such processes to take place devoid of parent input. Assembly Bill 1955 recently implemented by Governor Gavin Newsom prohibits disclosure of a child’s gender identity to parents by school districts statewide.

Addressing this, the public relations officer for Newport-Mesa stated that their gender support plans did involve parents as students expressed preference towards collaborating with them and their families.

In a recent furor following QR codes found in hallways directing students to LGBTQ counseling services without parental oversight, a local parent expressed the entanglement of schools in such affairs instead of focusing on educating the youngsters. She shared her concern over school administrators overlooking transparency and openly denying actions evident to anyone scrutinizing closely.
