Josiah Anthony, the lead pastor of Cross Timbers Church in Argyle, Texas, has stepped down from his position due to “inappropriate and hurtful” behavior towards current and former staff at the church. According to statements made by church elders, these actions stem from Anthony’s long-term struggle with emotional and mental health issues.

John Chalk, the senior-most elder at Cross Timbers Church, shared these developments with the congregation recently. He highlighted that Anthony had been dealing with his emotional and mental health challenges for an extended period. This situation led to a series of events over several years that came to light only in the past month.

Chalk explained that Anthony’s personal struggle resulted in decisions and actions that negatively affected members of the Cross Timbers family as well as its staff. The elders revealed that they were not privy to these issues previously as Anthony failed to share his struggles openly.

The elders saw fit for Anthony to step down once these matters emerged in recent weeks. Accepting this decision graciously, Anthony tendered his resignation which was received by the governing body. As he bears the consequences of his actions, continued support is being provided for both his recovery and restoration.

Before ascending to leadership, Anthony’s tenure in ministry dates back to 2011 when he served initially as a student minister then campus pastor at Cross Timber Church. His service was always marked by a passion for sharing Jesus’ hope with others through meeting emotional, practical, and spiritual needs within local communities and beyond.

Temporary leadership plans are now in place for Cross Timbers Church with an interim group of pastors taking charge. Included are Chase Trimmier (associate pastor), Kent Sparks (executive pastor), and Byron Copeland. Toby Slough will also be taking on more preaching duties until a permanent leader is found.
