In the unfolding scenario of the Paris Olympics 2024, controversy has brewed amid trusted news reports regarding prominent American rapper, Snoop Dogg’s slated role in carrying the Olympic torch just before the opening ceremony. However, this particular selection seems to pale in comparison with an earlier choice which had three French drag queens – Nicky Doll, Miss Martini, and Minima Gesté – partaking in the traditional relay. The ceremonial torchbearing began its journey from Greece via France, finally culminating in Paris where the Olympic games are being hosted.

The inclusion of these drag queens amongst a crowd of over 10,000 torchbearers has spurred a wave of attention and heated public discourse. While scattered factions present within left-wing circles have demonstrated support for this decision based on a drive towards inclusivity and tolerance, it cannot be denied that this move has also incited significant backlash.

A series of social media posts reflect on what many perceive as the erasure of women from public life. Statements dubbing it an ‘absurd theatre of madness’, noting cultural degradation, and advocating resistance by boycotting Olympics undergird sentiments expressed by many.
