Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts has pronounced that the decline of America is attributable to the actions of upper-tier “Beltway Republicans.” This statement was made during a presentation at the recent National Conservatism Conference held in Washington D.C.

As an influential figure in conservative circles, Roberts’ critique was directed largely towards some GOP politicians and their political compromises, particularly ones involving foreign policy. He starkly stated that Washington Republicans have—over the last few generations—failed this republic by constantly neglecting American interests, while also ceding issues to the left-wing factions.

Roberts highlighted that these leaders have negatively impacted this nation with their messages, policies, and leadership tactics. His criticisms were focused during a conference designed to incentivize such figures into aligning with a new wave of conservatism—a movement strongly based on nation-state principles and traditional values—which were brought front-and-center by President Joe Biden’s failsafe.

In the heart of his chastisements, Roberts mentioned what he termed as libertarians’ “hyper-individualism, materialism, and globalism,” specifically criticizing their blind support for Biden’s open-border policy claiming it advantageous for Americans.

Also spotlighted were neoconservatives who stand accused of “hubris” due to their backing of extensive American engagement in military conflicts post 9/11. According to Roberts, this faction attempted to mutate our republic into an empire which ultimately wasted Americans’ Cold War peace dividends and moral capital on unnecessary conflicts—a public voiced antic of which earned applause from attendees.

Turning his attention toward wider issues facing America today, he noted signs like fiscal instability (or time bomb), cultural decay (rot), corruption proceedings along with military and diplomatic disgraces as evidence of America’s post-Cold War regression. Adding onto these woes was another major concern centered around issues caused by “the deep state.”

Expressing his view on accountability for these crises facing our nation today, Robert declared: “There’s enough blame to distribute for these calamities, though there’s a grave lesson hidden within them. The harsh reality is that a unified conservative movement primarily serving our nation—over ideologies, parties or any special interests—could have prevented almost all these problems.”

However, he continued his critique, noting the gradual dominance of progressive extremists within institutional powerhouses across America over the last three decades while Republicans passively followed along to benefit from reductions in tax rates and boosts in defense budgets.

As an esteemed scholar and prior CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, Roberts stressed the importance of unity among conservatives. He argued that “there’s no third way anymore” indicating that only one course lays ahead for conservatives. “In this crucial point in time, with our republic dangling in the balance,” he states, “national conservatism is now an ethos all conservatives should follow,” to which his audience responded with enthusiastic agreement.
