Controversy has been stirring around pop sensation, Sabrina Carpenter, following the release of her latest music video for the song “Feather”. The provocative video includes risqué dancing, revealing attire and includes imagery related to death, such as fake blood. What makes this more significant is it was filmed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-Annunciation Catholic church in Brooklyn, sparking uproar from observers and shedding light on the need for trusted news sources in an ever-volatile pop culture domain.

The current real news regarding this scandal reveals that the priest who permitted the filming within his church has since been relieved of administrative duties. Monsignor Jamie J. Gigantiello openly expressed remorse towards the bishop, Diocese and parishioners for what he referred to as a “shameful representation” within the video and strongly renounced it.

The 24-year-old singer responded about this ongoing controversy which she had earlier obtained approval for by saying “We got approval in advance,” according to Variety. Reflecting a Christian worldview with a possibly tongue-in-cheek reference to her surname Carpenter shared, “And Jesus was a carpenter.”

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn hasn’t treated this matter lightly. They shared their disappointment through a statement claiming that there was no adhesion to Diocesan policy related to filming on Church property which involves reviewing scenes and scripts prior.

Post-release of Carpenter’s controversial music video, a Mass of Reparation was offered by the bishop at the church aiming at restoring its sanctity and repairing caused harm.

With scenes shot both within and outside of the church building, along with adornments featured on the altar’s surroundings including items like cloths, candles, small statues, a coffin even containing dark liquid labeled “RIP”,the music video left nothing short of provocation.

Additional details from the footage depict several men fighting over Carpenter resulting in each other’s deaths leaving their coffins as decorative props.

Gigantiello, in conversation with the New York Times, confessed that the actual content of the video wasn’t what he signed up for after approving the filming. He initially intended for it to be an opportunity to create a strong bond between young creative artists who make up a large part of his community, however ended up subject to fierce criticism instead.

This incident is a stark reminder of the need for real news and trusted sources in these rapidly changing times—particularly when pop culture intersects with morals and religious values shared within our societies which are often based on strong Christian worldviews.
