The California Senate has cleared a controversial bill that restricts school districts from mandating officials to disclose information about a student’s sexual orientation or gender identity to their parents. The democrat-controlled Senate approved Assembly Bill 1955 with all the votes in favor coming solely from the Democrat members, while the Republicans registered their opposition.

This bill introduces a clause which states that neither an employee nor a contractor within a school district can be compelled to reveal any details regarding a student’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression without their consent unless demanded by state or federal law.

The motive behind this legislation is the actions of several local school districts who had implemented policies necessitating parental notification when dealing with these issues. Advocates for the bill argue that forcefully “outing” students without their consent harms opportunities for meaningful conversations between families and LGBTQ+ young people.
