In a shocking incident, there were hostile incursions on churches and synagogues in Dagestan, a region located in Russia’s North Caucasus, this past Sunday. Confirmed reports state that these sudden attacks have resulted in an unclear count of civilian and police causalities.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has taken immediate action and initiated a terrorism probe concerning these violent strikes which occurred prevalently in Derbent and Makhachkala. A multitude of victims – civilians and law enforcers – have been grievously injured or worse, lost their lives in the turbulent events following the attack.

Notably among the victims, Shamil Khadulaev, Chairman of the Public Monitoring Commission of Dagestan disclosed that an Orthodox priest, aged 66 years old was found horrifically murdered at his church. Israel confirmed that there was indeed a dual-city attack on Makhachkala and Derbent particularly impacting both local guards stationed at synagogues and churchgoers. Unfortunately, to escalate concerns, they substantiated reports stating that an Orthodox priest from Derbent had been assassinated whereas varying houses of worship across Makhachkala withstood comparable attacks.

However, due to providence or sheer coincidence no worshippers were present within the confines of these attacked synagogues thus averting additional casualties from the Jewish community. Reports claim that gunfire exchanged within an Orthodox Church in a town recognized as a UNESCO heritage site. Here, reputedly another shootout ensued claiming further casualties.

Adding to these developments, Vladimir Putin’s appointed head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov shared his thoughts hinting at attempted disruption of the societal order by unknown people across Derbent and Makhachkala.
