Before the tragic road trip across the country that ended with Brian Laundrie allegedly murdering Gabby Petito and later taking his own life, signs of a fraught relationship were already present. Within a 366-page document released by the FBI, an undated letter penned by Petito before their journey sheds some light on their struggles.

In her heartfelt message to Laundrie, Petito pleaded for an end to hurtful words and voiced her unwavering support. “Brian, you know how much I love you,” she wrote, calling for teamwork instead of discord, and reassuring him about her continuous backing despite their challenges.

Apologizing for losing temper over trivial matters, Petito also expressed her empathy for Laundrie’s pain: “I love you so much it hurts. So seeing you in pain is killing me.” Her repeatedly voiced affection goes along with apologies for unmentioned sins and clear cries for forgiveness.

These documents came public three months after both the Petito and Laundrie families settled a lawsuit brought by the former seeking $100k in damages resulting from alleged actions of the latter. The exact settlement figure remains undisclosed.

Laundrie is speculated to have ended his life after going off-radar post-murdering his fiancée – a crime he confessed to according to the FBI. A notebook found alongside his body in Florida’s Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in October 2021 was made public in June 2022. His acknowledgement reads: “I ended her life…I thought it was merciful… but I see now all the mistakes I made.”

He further suggested that following an accidental fall during their visit to Wyoming, he strangled 22-year-old Petito out of perceived mercy – barring her from enduring worsening physical agony. He described this painful scene in detail citing about trying to carry her after she fell into a creek but failing and them keeping warm next to a fire, hence leading to the dreadful act. He regretfully marks this as his greatest “mistake.”

The duo was touring national parks when Petito went MIA. Last seen in August, her absence was reported in September after Laundrie returned alone to his Florida residence. His parents declared him missing 10 days later.

Found on September 19, 2021, in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, Petito’s body provided a gruesome end to the search for her whereabouts. A month later, Laundrie’s remains were discovered, closing the somber chapter with grim finality.
