After around 14 months of relentless legal pursuit against former President Donald Trump, the Democrats received the result they had been angling for in a New York City courtroom: a “guilty” verdict. This landmark ruling, as it attempts to put away a prominent former and potential future president, may metaphorically imply that we have crossed an allegorical ‘Rubicon.’ However, this is certainly not the first transgressive act.

There were numerous debatable instances in prior years that could be seen as crossing this Rubicon. One might recall how the Obama administration took legal action against religious sisters from the small sect known as Little Sisters of the Poor in order to obligate them to subsidize abortion-inducing drugs. Many argued then that we crossed a Rubicon when Democratic party members repudiated thousands of years’ worth of civic convention predicated on “innocent until proven guilty” during Brett Kavanaugh’s contentious Supreme Court confirmation process.

The trend seems to continue when it comes to recalling how Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris rallied financial support for releasing arrested protesters affiliated with Antifa and Black Lives Matter. Instances such as reputed attorneys serving President Trump like John Eastman being legally prosecuted also evoke concerns about crossing certain boundaries; Peter Navarro and Steve Bannon being sent to jail adds weight to these concerns.

Therefore, using the symbolism of crossing a clamoring brook – The Rubicon – seems hush-hush in comparison with what we are going through presently. We seem instead to be navigating broad oceans at great speeds under the leadership of contemporary pioneers akin to Magellan: President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrat crusaders.

Nevertheless, no matter how revolutionary or catastrophic their undertakings may be, precedents have been established already. In view of this reality, one needs to mull over whether all these actions – particularly those lined up against Trump – will ultimately benefit the Democrats at all?

A brief analysis suggests otherwise. Post-verdict, Democrats seem to be barely making an impact on the early polls. Major national polls conducted post-verdict reveal a marginal lead for Trump, casting doubts over the efficacy of Democratic tactics. Given that President Biden has failed to make much ground in a swiftly evolving political landscape where Republicans continue to hold a default advantage in Electoral College arithmetic, there is ample reason for strategists within the Biden-Harris campaign to be anxious.

Secondly, there’s the contentious issue of the profound damage that these procedures have instilled within the American collective psyche – particularly with respect to their trust towards their justice system. This disillusionment owes much to multiple indictments against Trump and argues for a two-tier justice system. To illustrate, one can examine how differently authorities treated BLM-Antifa protesters compared to attendees of U.S Capitol gathering on January 6th.

Furthermore, it seems that conservative groups are quickly regrouping and preparing a more robust defense against what they view as overzealous lawfare from domestic adversaries seeking punitive actions against them. Given all these factors combined – lack of poll gains after major legal victories against Trump and increasing backlash from right-leaning political factions – it can be inferred that this prolonged legal pursuit may result in more trouble than triumph for Democrats.

In short, such deliberations raise important questions about our democratic principles and our future. More than ever before, championing real news and trusted news becomes essential amidst flurry partisan agendas threatening our shared values grounded on Christian worldview practices in politics.
