“Politicizing the Past: Misappropriation of Founding Fathers in Modern Political Discourse”

When the Manhattan District Attorney, a known Democrat, and his 12 jurors – most likely of the same political leaning – convicted Donald Trump on inflated felony charges related to business accounting, it was all but certain that liberal journalists would strive to dub this the greatest event in history.

The term ‘historic’ seems to be a favorite among such journalists, particularly when results align with their views. Nevertheless, whether this ruling will remain standing or be overturned on appeal remains uncertain. A comparison can be drawn to Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1999 for perjury related to his scandalous affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. Back then, Geraldo Rivera appeared on the ‘Today’ show expressing outrage at what he termed a spiteful action and a legislative coup d’etat in direct violation of the framers’ intent.

In contrast, Trump’s dual impeachments were never considered coups by NBC News. Even more frustrating is how left-leaning activists like Rivera presume to speak on behalf of our Constitution’s framers. It’s not just about finding the result distasteful – these implications suggest that these outcomes are also revolting from the perspective of figures like James Madison and others. This position is ironic considering that progressives commonly criticize our Founding Fathers as embodying racist, sexist, capitalist patriarchy.

Similar misappropriations occurred during Trump’s trial where yet again America’s revolutionary icons seemed co-opted by Democrats. George Stephanopoulos used John Adams’ words as ammunition against Trump opining that the heart and lungs of liberty are undergoing an unprecedented stress test due to recent political events.

Peter Baker from The New York Times made Patrick Henry appear an adversary of Trump in his White House column misleadingly labeled as a “News Analysis.” According to him, Henry feared that criminals might someday occupy presidential offices and exploit their powers against those seeking accountability – “Away with your president; we shall have a king.”

Such rhetoric about presidents misusing their authority can also be turned against current President Joe Biden. In a CNN segment, Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Mass., was taken to task by analyst Scott Jennings for Biden’s disregard of both the judicial system and Congress in offering a $165 billion student loan ‘forgiveness’ plan to appeal to younger voters.

Increasingly, Democrats and their media counterparts utilize history to justify their left-aligned agenda. They seem not to care about compromising democratic norms and the equal powers of governmental branches as long as it serves their interests. In these scenarios, our Founding Fathers get reduced to mere puppets in their never-ending political maneuvers.

It’s essential for readers searching for real news from reliable sources with Christian worldviews to stay vigilant about these instances when history is used as a tool against democratically elected leaders.
