The Department of Justice (DOJ) has reportedly discovered some discrepancies in the management of federal grant funds by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is currently leading an election interference case from 2020 against ex-President Donald Trump. The assertions of these inconsistencies come to light as a response to claims raised regarding potential contradictions around awards that Willis might have given under a $488,000 federal grant planned for a Center for Youth Empowerment and Gang Prevention in Atlanta that never opened its doors.

In the course of our review of the award due to this inquiry, we’ve uncovered certain disproportions in what Fulton County reported to the Federal Subaward Reporting System. We are henceforth proceeding with consultations with them to amend their reporting suitably,” results from a spokesperson’s statement at DOJ.

Significant points during this query included payments Willis could have transferred as subawards towards the Alabama-based Offender Alumni Association. After claiming initially that no record existed linking this group as subgrantees, a subsequent admission from the agency revealed an “error” following documentation proof from Fulton County indicating that Willis’ office did transfer $88,900 to said association.

Offender Alumni Association’s director, Toni Barnett stated have having “no idea” why such payments were documented from their county in 2022 and 2023. Upon seeking comment on the matter, Willis’ office remained unresponsive.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan warned last month that if she failed to fully account for subpoenaed records issued in February, Willis may face contempt of Congress proceedings. This occurred after evidence showcasing employee misconduct over potential misusage of federal grants emerged prior to his termination. However, any contention regarding breach has been dismissed outright by Willis and she holds firm on her stance against defying subpoenae while communicating her continuous effort in document provision.

Willis was granted permission by a judge last March to continue her 2020 election case after the resignation of her special prosecutor, Nathan Wade arising from romantic relationship rumours involving the two. Alternatively, Willis could step down; however, post-defense review appeal, she called for a ruling upholding from an appeals court.

The Georgia election case sees Trump along with 18 co-defendants pleading not guilty. Four of these have since accepted plea deals. As Trump faces four criminal cases alongside civil litigation in his pursuit for a second term in the White House, he remains firm on his innocence and attributes these charges as part of a politically instigated “witch hunt”.
