The world is bidding farewell to a remarkable man, Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, notably known as the oldest man in the world. His passing occurred this week in Táchira, Venezuela at the ripe age of 114 years old, just shy of his next birthday. His longevity was credited not only to leading an actively worked life but also importantly, to his deep-rooted Catholic faith and love for God.

Born on May 27, 1909, in El Cobre, Táchira, Venezuela as the ninth child among ten siblings. Pérez Mora held the recognized title from Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest man since Feb. 4, 2022. Despite having completed only five months of formal education due to his teacher falling sick at his early age of ten, he self-taught himself reading and writing using a book gifted by his teacher.

Pérez Mora led a dedicated life filled with diligence and devotion. Between pursuing agricultural work and serving sheriff duties resolving land and family disputes from 1948-1958 in Caricuena, he found joy. Furthermore, he dedicated six decades of his life to his loving wife Ediofina del Rosario García who passed away in 1997; together they parented eleven children. The importance he placed on family extended to his broad lineage which included: forty-two grandchildren along with thirty great-grandchildren & great-great-grandchildren.

As commented by Freddy Abreu within Catholic News Agency’s Spanish-speaking outlet in 2022: “My Uncle Vicente transmits a lot of peace, tranquility and radiates a lot of joy. He’s a person who has a lot to give.”. Abreu further asserted that Pérez Mora appreciated simple pleasures and was wholly grateful for all God had bestowed upon him.

Consistent praying twice daily including reciting rosary prayers were some pillars that supported Péreza Mora’s Christian worldview. He shared with the Guinness World Records that the prescription to his long life was hard work, taking rest on holidays, sleeping early, daily indulgence in a glass of Aguardiente (a sugar liquor), and always having God at heart.

His death resonated across the political landscape of Venezuela with various leaders expressing heartfelt sentiments towards him. The Governor of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, expressed deep pain at Pérez Mora’s departure memorizing him as a humble, diligent man whose enthusiasm for family and tradition was etched into the fabric of Venezuelan society. Comments from Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s President echoed these sentiments as he acknowledged Pérez Mora’s transition to eternity.
