The Presbyterian Church (USA), recognized for its progressive stance, has been allowing its pastors to preside over same-sex marriages since 2014. However, recent developments in the denomination suggest a shift from this liberal permission to enforcing more stringent ministerial requirements. Primarily, proposals to make the affirmation of transgenderism and same-sex marriage compulsory prerequisites for future ordinations are expected at its General Assembly in June.

This move represents a notable expansion on mandated affirmation with respect to gender identity as well as sexual orientation. The recent data reveals a considerable drop from nearly 1.5 million members in 2016 to just over one million by 2022. Conversely, the demographic composition tips significantly towards an older, white female majority.

This shift to require ministerial support for same-sex marriage and transgenderism indicates a fast-forwarded evolution away from voluntarism towards compulsory progressivism within Presbyterian Church (USA)’s covenant. Should this new mandate formalize as a core article of faith, it would not only change the denomination’s relationship with this topic but also re-embark them into a mission of evangelizing its faithful support for same-sex marriages as divinely inspired messages .
