In recent weeks, the Baptist Associations of North Carolina and Kentucky have unanimously adopted resolutions advocating for equal legal protection for unborn children. These breakthrough news items underscore a deep-rooted theological conviction that reveres all lives as reflections of God’s image – including lives in utero – deserving safekeeping from heinous acts such as murder.

This strong chrisitian worldview, firmly opposing abortion, aligns with the biblical truth but faces stiff opposition. Interestingly some of this opposition emanates from surprising sources within Southern Baptist quarters itself. Notable adversaries include individuals like Brent Leatherwood and the ERLC, among others.

Most recently, there has been a wave of resistance during the Louisiana state convention. Despite attempts to introduce a resolution that aligns with the anti-abortion stance, it was unsuccessfully tabled due to opposition from certain Baptist leaders.

One pastor argued passionately against it, articulating what many consider absurd reasoning. Drawing parallels with the narrative maintained by Brent Leatherwood advocating that “mothers are victims”, certain pastors suggest hormonal changes leading women to make regrettable decisions should absolve them of guilt associated with aborting their child.

A telling statement from one such pastor went: “Research shows 70% of women have either been coerced or pressured into an abortion…All women undergoing significant hormonal changes in their first trimester face severe impact on their decision-making abilities.”

Certain individuals aren’t supporting this stance out of personal belief or righteousness but rather to appease specific congregational members. By presenting these arguments, they aim to demonstrate pro-life commitment without alienating any female members.
